LC's Galloway Earns Scholar-Athlete Award
Hornets' Cross Country Athlete Tabbed For ODAC/Farm Bureau Honor
FOREST, Va. --- Lynchburg College cross country runner, Molly Galloway, is one of seven student-athletes from Old Dominion Athletic Conference member schools to earn a 2010 ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award during the fall athletic schedule. Galloway was tabbed from a pool of nominees by a vote of each of the conference's sports information directors.
The ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar Athlete Award is given to a student-athlete in each of the conference's 22 sponsored sports. Farm Bureau Insurance of Virginia is the presenter of each of the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Awards, forming a partnership with the ODAC to emphasize the NCAA Division III philosophy of the complete student-athlete experience. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore standing and have spent at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, must maintain at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, and must have participated in at least 50-percent of the team's events as a starter or key contributor.
"I am really honored to be receiving such an award. I had no idea how prestigious it was and I'm really thankful I was the recipient," explained Galloway upon learning the details and background of the ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete Awards.
Galloway, a junior from Fairfax, Virginia, is majoring in Environmental Science and boasts a 3.99 grade point average. She is currently involved with the Alliance for Energy Awareness at Lynchburg College and also serves as a staff writer for several school publications. Galloway was a member of the 2009 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III Women's Cross Country All-Academic Team.
On the course, Galloway placed eighth in this year's ODAC championship race as she crossed the finish line in 24:04.00, earning Second Team All-ODAC laurels. She owns the ODAC's third-fastest time this season after finishing the 5k course in 19:36.90 at the Blue Ridge Open.
When asked what it has taken for her to be a successful student-athlete, Galloway said, "For one thing, I feel like running helps me in the classroom because it is my anxiety reducer, so without running it's hard for me to function. It can be challenging because I'm not the most organized person, so it's really helped me focus and zone in on what needs to be done. I not only compete in cross country and track, but I'm also involved in other programs around campus, so time is always a premium."
