Payne Pushes Lynchburg to Victory over Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, VA – Aricquel Payne tallied a season-high 20 kills to help the Lynchburg College volleyball team defeat Shenandoah University on Saturday.  LC won 25-16, 25-10, 21-25, and 25-16 in four sets to hand Shenandoah its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) loss.

Lynchburg came out of the gate with great efficiency.  In the first set the team registered 13 kills, with Payne recording eight of them and Brittany Crawford and Rebecca Loftis each producing two.  As a team LC hit with a .407 percentage in the first game.

The second would continue in the same pattern, with Lynchburg improving its percentage to .462, with 14 kills coming in the set.  Payne and Loftis each had four to pace LC.

In the third, SU took advantage of some errors to pull out the victory.  Lynchburg had its lowest attack percentage of any set and Shenandoah recorded 10 kills to push a fourth game.  Samantha Schambach had all five of her kills for the match in this game, including the final point for SU.

Lynchburg finished off Shenandoah in the fourth after picking up 13 kills.  Crawford finished off the match with a kill from an assist by Rachel Turk.

Turk and Brooke Moughon had 23 and 16 assists respectively for Lynchburg, which were the high totals in the match.  Loftis recorded 11 kills, and five players recorded over eight digs, showing the defensive prowess of LC in the match.

Haley Smith led Shenandoah (7-2 overall, 1-1 ODAC) with seven kills, who lost its first conference game after moving from the USA South Conference this past summer.

Lynchburg (8-4, 2-2) returns to Turner Gymnasium on Wednesday night with another ODAC showdown with Hollins University.  Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
