Q&A With Hornet of the Week Rachel Huffman

Q&A With Hornet of the Week Rachel Huffman

The Lynchburg College athletic department is starting a new question and answer feature with our Hornet of the Week. The second student-athlete in this series is junior volleyball middle hitter Rachel Huffman. She led the Hornet volleyball team to a 4-0 record last week, dropping just one game. She blasted a team-high 32 kills for a .482 hitting percentage, and added 11 blocks and three service aces.

Why did you choose Lynchburg College?

I chose Lynchburg College because I immediately fell in love with the campus. I love being at a small school because you end up knowing everyone and forming solid relationships. I also bonded with the volleyball team instantly. They were so nice, open, and super funny. I knew right away that I wanted to be a part of this team.

What are your goals for the season, both individual and team?

As a team our goals for this season include winning ODACs and making it to nationals. We work so hard every season, but this season has started on such a positive note that I know we can accomplish anything. Our team is very focused and ready to do whatever it takes to come out on top! My individual goal is to make the All ODAC First-Team. I tore my ACL freshman year at LC, so I've been working towards higher goals with each season. I am very fortunate to be a part of the women's volleyball team.

Why did you choose biomedical science? What is your favorite class or teacher?

I chose biomedical science because I have always been interested in the health field. I find the human body to be extremely fascinating and aspire to learn more. My favorite class that I have taken is Microbiology. We basically looked at microorganisms, which are microscopic, unicellular, and cell-cluster organisms. My teacher made the information fun and easy to understand. By the end of the course we were given unknown bacteria and through a series of tests we were able to identify which specific bacteria we had. I guess you can say I am a science nerd!

What are your aspirations after graduation?

After graduation I plan on attending medical school. My top choice is Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. I am from Virginia Beach, so it would be nice to be back near that area. My dream job is to become a pediatrician.
