Three Hornets Qualify for NCAA DIII National Track & Field Championship

LYNCHBURG, VA –Three Lynchburg College student-athletes have qualified to compete later this week at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio (just outside Columbus).

James Bell, Jessica Gibbs and LaCear Hubbard each advanced to the three-day competition this Thursday-Saturday, May 26-28. Bell, a junior, ranks sixth in NCAA Division III in the decathlon with 6,508 points. Gibbs, a senior, is eighth with 4,476 in the heptathlon, while Hubbard, a sophomore, ranks 17th in the long jump (5.68 meters).

All three are looking to take home their first All-American accolades, awarded to the top eight competitors in each event. Bell, Gibbs and Hubbard will begin competition Thursday afternoon. The heptathlon begins at noon and runs through Friday; while the decathlon begins Thursday at 1 p.m. and finishes up Friday. The women's long jump is slated for Thursday at 3 p.m.
