Last Saturday, April 16, the Lynchburg College Women’s Soccer team and coaching staff traveled to Ashland, Virginia to participate in the “Running for Anna” 5K in Ashland, Virginia.  Ashland is the hometown of Anna Wright who was a LCWS team member who was killed in a car accident last summer.  Anna’s parents and family worked together to plan a race in their neighborhood to raise money to support Anna’s well projects through Sports Outreach Institute.  They began planning the race at the end of February.  In a month and a half, they planned an event that included 150 registrants--a remarkable response in a very short time period.

Race day was chilly and rainy, but that only stopped a small portion of the registered runners.  Over 80 people showed up and ran through the wet rain as they honored and remembered Anna.  Before the race, Anna’s father spoke to the crowd expressing his deepest appreciation and thanks to those present especially the Lynchburg College Women’s Soccer team as they have been the “light in [his] tunnel of darkness.”  What a beautiful thing to say!  It shows the power of family, compassion, and presence; three things we try to demonstrate and teach at Lynchburg College.  Before the start of the race, Coach Olsen also spoke to the crowd as a representative of the team.

The course was 3.1 miles on the dot encompassing the neighborhood of the Wright family.  Food and water were in abundance for runners and walkers as they completed the race.  To get out of the rain, the Wright’s opened up their home and barn for participants.  Many smiles filled the room as the spirit and memory of Anna touched all those present.  Over $3800 were raised towards Anna’s well project in northern Uganda through the work of SOI.  Water will be delivered; lives will be changed!
