2011 Spring Alumni Match Recap

On Sunday, April 3, the Lynchburg College Women’s Soccer team held it’s 2011 Alumni game.  The game featured the current LC squad against former LC women’s soccer players.  Over twenty alumni returned to campus to play in the game including four All-Americans.  The current LC team scored a quick strike two minutes into the match from junior Jess Mader.  It looked like it might be a long day for the alumni as sophomore Kristen Melchiori scored another goal halfway through the first half.  But all LCWS teams fight hard until the end and never give up so the game was definitely not over.

The heart, passion, and work ethic garnered while athletes at Lynchburg was still alive as the alumni fought back tying the game up before the half on a goal by Class of 2011 graduate Betsy Kwiatkowski.  The second half started much like the first with heavy pressure from the current spring squad who went up 2-1 shortly into the second half.  It seemed as though the alumni would lose the battle in this year’s alumni game until late in the second half when Aud Hamby King (2008) scored the tying goal with ten minutes left in the game.  At the end of regulation, the game was tied 2-2.  The fans wanted to go to penalty kicks; they got their wish.  The current Lynchburg squad won 3-1 in penalty kicks as the alumni struggled to find the back of the net against penalty kick extraordinaire Audrey Moore.

Although tired by the game’s end, the alumni withstood the intense pressure and speed of the current team to provide a tough opponent.  Upon completion of the game, both teams join together for food and fellowship at the Pavilion.  We look forward to more great battles in years to come.

The Lynchburg College Women’s Soccer team would like to thank Tom Cassidy and the Lynchburg College Office of Alumni Relations for their kind generosity in support of our game and post game reception!
