Q and A with Hornet of the Week Nikki Rhodes

The Lynchburg College athletic department each week showcases a question and answer feature with our Hornet of the Week. The eleventh student-athlete selected this year is women's soccer senior Nikki Rhodes.

Nikki was instrumental this week in helping the Hornets reach the third round of the NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament.  She was part of a defense that shut out Frostburg St. in the first round game.  In the second round game against Montclair St. she made an even larger impact.  Nikki scored the first goal of the game, which turned out to be the game-winner, on a free kick.  She then cleared the ball off the Hornet goal-line to preserve the one-goal lead later in the second half.

Why did you choose Lynchburg College?

I chose Lynchburg College because when I visited LC it felt like I was at home and with the beautiful campus I knew I would feel comfortable here. I also wanted to study exercise physiology and heard that LC had a good program. I knew that LC had a good women's soccer program which is another reason why I chose LC because I wanted to be a part of the program.

What do you like most about LC women's soccer?

What I like most is that we are one big happy family on and off the field. I can go to my teammates whenever I need help with something. I also like our chemistry that we have on the field, and playing together throughout the season we have been able to gel really well. I like that our team this year can overcome so many adversities and we still find a way to win the big games.

What is your favorite moment thus far as a Hornet?

My favorite moment so far would have to be when we made it to the national semifinals my freshman year. The journey that we made to get there is something I will not forget. Another one of my favorite moments is when we get to ring the bell after winning the ODAC tournament.

What was it like to have scored the first goal in the second round win and advance to the NCAA quarterfinals?

Knowing that I helped my team advanced to the third round, it is a feeling I cannot put into words. We haven't made it this far since my freshman year and to help my team get back there is a great feeling that I will remember forever. I knew that once we got one goal, we would have the momentum we needed to push through the rest of the game to win it.
