LYNCHBURG, VA – Lynchburg College women's soccer recent graduate Lauren Hammond spent nearly six months this year in South Africa for her internship for the sports management program at the College.

The 2010 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Scholar Athlete of the Year for women's soccer travelled with Sportslink, a branch of the organization Operation Mobilisation who sends people on mission trips all over the world.

Hammond worked with three others in facilitating and running trainings, doing basic administration work, organizing fundraisers, and coaching a 7th-grade boys' soccer team in a local township. Based in Pretoria, South Africa she ran trainings in Johannesburg and surrounding townships including, Mamelodi, Diepsloot, and Soweto.  She was also able to train in Swaziland, and visit Cape Town. 

Throughout her time in South Africa, Hammond was able to participate in a variety of activities while truly making a difference with the people there.

Hammond, a senior defender from Chattanooga, TN, was a consistent member of the Lynchburg Dean's List and was named to the 2010 CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District Second Team.
