Buckingham, LC Women's Lacrosse Overpowers Marlins in ODAC Opener 17-9

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College women's lacrosse team opened the 2012 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) season with a commanding 17-9 victory over Virginia Wesleyan College.

LC stormed out of the gates with four goals in the first six minutes of the game.  Junior Kendall Adkin tallied the first of the afternoon with Lesley Buckingham notching the next two.  Junior Julie Will scored the first of her three on the afternoon soon after on a pass from Buckingham.  VWC answered back with a free position goal from Nikki Salyers with 23:00 remaining and the two teams would go back and forth until LC led 6-3 with 11 minutes left in the first half.

Lynchburg scored the next five goals, taking a commanding 11-3 lead.  The Marlins scored two goals before the intermission, but LC answered with the first three and six of the first seven goals in the second half to stretch the lead to 11.

LC was led by a career-day from Buckingham.  The senior registered eight goals (second highest single-game total) and assisted on four others for a total of 12 points (also the second highest single-game total).  Buckingham's tireless day was shown in her last goal, deflecting a pass from backup goalie Brittany MacKnew across the goal line.

Adkin added four goals while Will had a solid all-around day winning seven draw controls and scooping up three ground balls.  Senior Christina Tran allowed only six goals in 50 minutes of work, picking up her third win of the year.

Virginia Wesleyan (1-4 overall, 0-1 ODAC) was led by Salyers and Courtney Shelton, who each registered a hat-trick.  Michelle Mace started in goal and had nine saves in the loss.

The Hornets (3-1, 1-0) end the two-game home-stand with a non-conference matchup against Wittenberg College on March 17th at 7 p.m.
