LC Splits with #7 Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA  - The Lynchburg College softball team split its fourth-straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Sunday, winning the first game at seventh-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College 5-3, and dropping the second 3-0.

Following two scoreless innings in the first contest, Amber Ingram opened the top of the third with a double. Two outs later Jessi Hall drove her in with a single, and Melanie Tenney followed with a triple to put LC ahead 2-0. VWC answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, but LC plated two more runs in the top of the fifth on a Marlin error to go ahead 4-2. Tenney hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to make the score 5-3, but VWC threatened in the bottom of the seventh. With Marlin runners perched at second and third and only one out, shortstop Nicole Riley nabbed a line drive and doubled the runner off third base to end the game.

Junior Elizabeth Fioretti earned the win in just her third start of the season, working all seven innings and scattering five hits and four walks. Hall had two hits, and Danielle Powell and Tenney each had two RBI.

MacKenzie Creech allowed just three hits and no walks for Virginia Wesleyan in the second game over 6 2/3 innings, striking out seven. Ingram threw a complete game for Lynchburg as well, allowing just four hits and two walks in six innings.

The Hornets (18-10/6-4 ODAC) host Bridgewater College Wednesday at 3 p.m. in more conference action.
