#3 Salisbury Sweeps LC Softball
SALISBURY, MD – Two of the top teams in the region squared off Sunday afternoon, with Salisbury University taking both ends of a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Lynchburg College 2-0 and 11-3 in five innings. Salisbury is ranked #3 in NCAA Division III and remains unbeaten at 10-0. The losses break a nine-game winning streak for LC.
Hope Johnson threw three scoreless innings in the opener, allowing just two hits with one walk and two strikeouts. She was relieved by Elizabeth Fioretti in the top of the fourth after the lead runner reached base, and Fioretti worked through an error to leave two runners stranded and the game still scoreless.
The Sea Gulls struck in the bottom of the fifth with two runs, as Paige Knussman brought two runners home with a single. Rachel Johnson made the two-run lead stand up for SU, throwing a complete-game shutout with 15 strikeouts and just two hits and one walk.
In game two, Salisbury scored three runs each in the first, third and fourth innings, and finished off the game with two in the fifth. Lynchburg had eight hits, and Kayla St. John paced the offense with two hits, including a double, and three RBI. Melanie Tenney went 2-3 with two runs scored and Skylar Seals also had two hits. Knussman was 4-4 with a home run and five RBI for SU.
The Hornets (9-3) travel to the University of Mary Washington for another non-conference doubleheader Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
