Lynchburg Softball takes DH against Averett

DANVILLE, VA – The 18th-ranked Lynchburg College softball team continued its winning ways by taking a doubleheader against Averett University, 6-1 and 7-6, on Wednesday in non-conference action.

Lynchburg and Averett plated a run each in the first inning of game one, but the Hornets would score five unanswered to coast to a 6-1 victory.

Tied 1-1 in the third inning, Nicole Shipp singled and stole second before Nicole Riley singled to third base with one out. Melanie Tenney put down a bunt single to load the bases for Danielle Powell who singled in Shipp and Riley. Amber Ingram made solid contact, putting a single into left field to score Tenney for a 4-1 lead.

Hope Johnson picked up the win with five innings of one-run ball while striking out four.

Lynchburg and Averett went back and forth for the majority of game two, with both teams plating runs in the second, fifth, and sixth innings to maintain a 5-5 tie after seven innings.

The Hornets started the eighth inning with Powell placed on second base, per softball extra inning rules. Cassie Phillips located her bunt perfectly, reaching on a single while sending Powell to third base. Jordan Nunn came in to pinch run for Phillips, and stole second before Erica Damone walked to load the bases. Ingram singled through the left side to plate Powell for the one-run advantage, and a wild pitch by Amy Hamlett during the next at bat scored Nunn for a 7-5 lead.

Averett (13-21) threatened in the bottom of the inning, plating a run, and looked primed for another with runners on the corners and two out. LC went to Johnson out of the bullpen and the sophomore struck out the only batter she faced to pick up the save and preserve the win in game two.

Tenney went 6-for-7 on the day while Ingram drove in two runs.

Lynchburg (18-5/3-1 ODAC) returns home Saturday for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader with Randolph-Macon at 1:30 p.m.
