Pitching Dominant as Lynchburg Softball Takes Two More at Salisbury Tournament

SALISBURY, MD – The Lynchburg College softball team received two outstanding pitching performances Saturday as the Hornets swept a pair of games at the Salisbury University Sea Gull Classic. LC ends the Classic with a 4-0 record, allowing just two runs and seven hits combined in those games.

Two Hornet pitchers combined for a no-hitter in the opener, an 11-0 victory over Hunter College (NY) in five innings. Elizabeth Fioretti was perfect in the circle for four innings, striking out 10. Hannah Winfree finished the game off, allowing just one walk.

Jessi Hall was 2-3 with three runs scored and two triples and Melanie Tenney drove in three runs. LC stole seven bases in the contest and took advantage of four Hawk errors to plate eight un-earned runs.

Hope Johnson cruised through seven innings in the second game, a 5-1 win over Gettysburg College. She allowed four hits and one walk to earn her fourth win of the season.

LC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, two coming from a Danielle Powell double. Lynchburg added two insurance runs in the fifth, as RBI singles from Nicole Riley and Powell provided the scoring. Powell finished with two hits and three RBI and Nicole Shipp singled, stole a base and scored a run.

The Hornets (8-3) will remain in Salisbury to face off with the host Sea Gulls in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday at noon. The Sea Gulls (11-1), ranked 18th in the nation, suffered their first loss of the season Saturday afternoon in the Classic.
