Hornets Softball Season Ends with 9-5 Defeat to Emory and Henry

SALEM, VA – The Emory and Henry College softball team scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-5 and eventually eliminate the Lynchburg College from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Softball Tournament.

The Wasps got on the board in the first inning after Jenae Morrissey knocked a lead-off double to center field.  After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, Morrissey scored on a Veronica Blankenship single to right field.

LC responded to take the lead in the fourth with two runs crossing the plate.  Amber Sulter tripled to lead off the inning and later scored on Skylar Seals RBI-single.  Using a little small-ball tactics, Seals advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout with two outs in the inning.  Sarah Smith singled to right field to send Seals home, as the Hornets took a 2-1 lead.  However, E&H would come back to tie it in the bottom of the frame.

Lynchburg would once again take the lead in the fifth inning with Taylor Walker scoring on a fielding error.

The fireworks erupted in the sixth inning for both teams, with each side scoring multiple runs.  With two outs, the Hornets started a rally with a single by Jessi Hall.  Hall advanced to third after stealing second with a throwing error by the catcher.  Walker doubled in Hall and then scored on an error with LC taking a 5-2 lead.

E&H countered in the bottom half of the inning, taking the lead for good.  Martha Fluharty, Bethany Anderson, Cortney Halsey, and Sylvia Robbins all tallied an RBI in the inning, with Morrissey adding two of her own to stretch the lead to four.

Brandy Bryant earned the victory for the Wasps (14-14) after going five innings and allowing only three earned runs.

With the loss, Lynchburg was knocked-out of the double-elimination ODAC tournament, and finished the season with a 21-19 overall record and a 12-6 record in the ODAC.
