Men's Track & Field

Q and A with Hornet of the Week Tom Sippie

The Lynchburg College athletic department each week showcases a question and answer feature with our Hornet of the Week. The 22nd student-athlete selected this year is men's track and field freshman Tom Sippie.

Tom had an incredible meet for the Hornets.  He won  the 200 meter dash in 22.51, barely edging another runner for first place.  Tom then went on to win the 400 meter dash in 50.03, which puts him 30th in the nation.  He also anchored the 4x400 meter relay team.  They captured the gold in a time of 3:23.44.  For his efforts at the meet, Tom was named Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Rookie of the Year and helped the men's team capture their 16th straight Indoor ODAC title.

What do you like most about LCTF?

The LCTF is like a second family to me, It doesn't matter what event an athlete is doing the team is always there cheering you on. Also, the program is so great the coaches know what they are doing to get the best out of us and the right time to peak in our events, when it counts.

How did it feel to capture rookie of the year honors and help the LCTF to another title?

The Rookie of the Year title felt great to capture, but it had no meaning behind it like a 16th straight ODAC title win. Just to be a part of the legacy of the Lynchburg College track team and be able to score points to help the team out was a much bigger accomplishment than the Rookie of the Year.

How did the track and field team affect your decision to attend Lynchburg?

The track and field team definitely had a big impact on where I wanted to attend a four year school. The track team is such a powerful team and its history behind it can definitely prove it.  However, I loved the college when I went on tour and when I had the opportunity to meet the team I felt like I was already a part of the group. Also, staying here for an overnight visit helped a lot because I found a group of guys on the men's track team that I clicked with instantly.

What is your favorite moment thus far as a hornet?

My favorite moment as a hornet thus far is being able to help the track and field team to its 16th straight ODAC title, and being able to win the 400, 200, and help anchor the winning 4x4 team.
