Ricky Flynn Finishes 12th at Olympic Trials
HOUSTON, TX – Former Lynchburg College standout Ricky Flynn competed in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials Saturday in Houston, and he did not disappoint.
Flynn 09', MBA 11' had qualified for the trials by finishing fourth among Americans at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon in October. Despite this being his first marathon, the increased distance did not deter the former Hornet. He ran the marathon in 2:12:29, which had him finish 12th overall. His time was the fastest ever for a 12th place finisher in U.S. Olympic trials history. Flynn was also the second runner who finished that ran unaffiliated.
Meb Keflezighi won the event with Ryan Hall and Abdi Abidrahman coming in second and third respectively. They will round out the U.S. Olympic team. These three men were part of a loaded field of 111 runners, with 85 of them finishing the race.
Flynn had a storied career at Lynchburg College. He was named an All-American seven times in his career. In indoor track and field, he garnered one honor in the 5,000 meter race in 2009. He won four All-American honors in outdoor track and field: the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races in both 2009-2010. However, Flynn had his greatest success in cross country. In 2008, he earned All-American honors and in 2009 he won the National Championship, the first in cross country for Lynchburg College.
