Ashton Scores Twice; Hornets Win Thriller in Double OT

WOODBRIDGE, VA – Senior Chaz Ashton scored two goals including a game-winner in the second overtime period to defeat Salisbury University 2-1 in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday.

The Sea Gulls of Salisbury got on the board first after Chase Humphrey zoomed in a goal to the top right of the net off of a corner kick from Michael Freeney late in the first half. The Hornets went into halftime trailing 1-0, but came out strong in the second.

Ashton's first goal came at 71:22 in the second half off of an assist by junior Luke Moore, tying the game at 1-1. Both defenses clamped down at the end of the regulation, sending the game into overtime. Moore had a chance of winning it at 90:09 in the first overtime period, but his shot glanced off of the post.

Going in to the second overtime period, both teams continued to play stifling defense, until the Sea Gulls finally gave in. Ashton's game-winning goal came at 104:43 off of an assist from sophomore Daniel Jobrack, ending the game with 2-1 victory for the Hornets.

Senior Jonathan Sheffield had a spectacular performance in goal for Lynchburg, saving seven balls, including two in overtime. Drew Staedeli recorded two saves for Salisbury.

The Hornet men (2-2-1) will be back in action on Saturday, September 21 at home for Parents' Weekend when they will face off in their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup of the year against Randolph-Macon College at 7:00 p.m.
