LC Men's Soccer Nets Big Win, Scores Home Game
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men's soccer team did more than just beat Virginia Wesleyan 1-0 Tuesday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
The Hornets claimed the three seed in the ODAC tournament set to start Saturday. LC's win was much needed as Guilford and Randolph both won to keep pace. A loss would have sent Lynchburg on the road in the first round.
Sophomore Luke Moore scored the game-winning goal for the Hornets at 24:03. Chaz Ashton sent the ball into the center of the pitch where Michael Venegas and Moore were standing. The defending ODAC Player of the Week Moore took the ball, dribbled around a defender, and scored past a diving Connor Kirkham who just barely got a hand on the ball.
The LC defense held strong in the second half as Virginia Wesleyan continued to push the ball into the Marlin offensive zone. Tom Titus, Josh Hinkle, and Zack Miller all made key plays to clear the ball in crucial situations. Earl Rimbey's play at midfield helped keep the Marlins' top scorer, Brian Cornell, at bay.
Junior Michael Releford made four saves for the Hornets. Kirkham made four for the Marlins.
Shots and corner kicks were even for both teams at 14 and six respectively.
The Hornets will host either Virginia Wesleyan or Bridgewater in the first round of the ODAC tournament this Saturday. Time is to be announced.
