LC Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to #8 F & M
LYNCHBURG, VA – Ben Beaver scored 43 seconds into the first overtime to help No. 8 Franklin and Marshall College defeat the Lynchburg College men's soccer team on Saturday, in the first game of the 2012 Shellenberger Classic.
The game began in a heavy downpour which caused for slower play and a few mishits. 11 minutes into the first half, the Diplomats struck first with Sam Lane putting one past LC goalie Michael Releford. F & M would strike a second time at 26:52 with a breakaway goal from Beaver.
However, the Hornets would respond later in the half. After earning a corner kick, Michael Venegas put his service perfectly into the goalie box and Tajee Harley got his head on it for his first career goal.
As the sun came out in the second half, the Diplomats had a chance to put the game out of reach as Vince Perry was one on one with Releford. Releford made a foot save to preserve the one-goal deficit.
The rest of the game was quiet until the 85th minute when Hornet forward Mustapha Dumbuya chased down a pass from Luke Moore. Dumbuya and Diplomat goalie T.J. White collided and the ball continued to bounce around in the box. A hard shot by Moore then bounced off three separate Diplomats and in net to tie the game up.
Then in the first minute of overtime, Lane streaked up the middle of the field and hit Beaver with a pass. Beaver made one move and hit a low shot to give the Diplomats the victory.
White made four saves for Franklin and Marshall (3-0 overall).
Lynchburg (1-2) will take on Greensboro College in the finale of the Shellenberger Classic, Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
