Maryville (TN) Defeats LC Men's Soccer 1-0
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Maryville College men's soccer team defeated Lynchburg College 1-0 Saturday afternoon in the first game of the two-day, four-team 2011 Shellenberger Memorial Classic.
Tyler Tinker scored the game's only goal 11:50 minutes into the contest on a crossing pass from Tom Webster. LC had a few scoring chances in the first half, but Maryville keeper Zach Gutzman made three first-half stops to keep LC off the board.
The second half was scoreless, but Lynchburg had a great scoring opportunity with under 10 seconds remaining, but Gutzman made a game-saving stop to seal the victory.
The Scots (3-0) held advantages of 16-13 in shots and 6-0 in corner kicks. Gutmzan made six saves, while LC net-minder Michael Releford made several tough stops and finished with seven saves overall.
Lynchburg (1-2) hosts the University of Mary Washington Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the last game on the classic slate.
