LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College men's soccer team scored a key early-season Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory Saturday night 3-0 over the visiting Maroons of Roanoke College.
The Hornets struck mid-way through the first period, as Zach Ward (pictured - Haymarket, VA/Battlefield) converted a feed from Matthew Rowe (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) for a 1-0 lead that held through halftime. Michael Abbonizio (Maple Glen, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) netted a goal two minutes after intermission on a beautiful cross from Shawn Bender (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) and Hunter Smith (Goode, VA/Jefferson Forest) added an insurance goal at 62:57 from Abbonizio. The LC defense and keeper Michael Releford (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) held Roanoke scoreless for the team's third-straight shutout.
Releford made three saves, while RC keeper Ryan Russell made four stops. Lynchburg out-shot its guests 17-14, but the Maroons held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Lynchburg (5-2-1/2-0 ODAC) hosts Hampden-Sydney College Monday at 7 p.m. in a rescheduled match from Wednesday.
