Hornet Men's Soccer Remains Unbeaten in ODAC Play with 4-0 Win at R-MC
Clinch #1 Seed in ODAC Tournament and Regular-Season Title
ASHLAND, VA - Less than a day after the Lynchburg College field hockey team earned the regular-season Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title and the #1 seed in the upcoming championship tournament, the Hornet men's soccer team accomplished the same feat. LC defeated Randolph-Macon College 4-0 Saturday afternoon in conference play to move 9-0 on the season in the league.
Michael Abbonizio (Maple Glen, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) opened the scoring at the 25:07 mark and Donald Hart III (pictured - Springfield, VA/Paul VI) followed 18 seconds before intermission to give the Hornets a 2-0 edge at the break. Zach Rusk (Dale city, VA/C.D. Hylton) netted a goal on a penalty kick midway through the second half and Stephen Brooks (Fairfax, VA/Paul VI) added a late insurance tally to close out the scoring.
LC held a 17-13 edge in shots and each team was awarded five corner kicks. Michael Releford (Blacksburg, VA/Blacksburg) made five stops to record his sixth shutout on the season and Matty Rocawich made seven saves for the Yellow Jackets (6-8-1/3-5-1 ODAC).
Lynchburg (12-3-1) ends the regular season Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at Guilford College. The Hornets will host a first-round ODAC game next Saturday against the #8 seed at a time to be determined.
