Q&A With Hornet of the Week Andrew Wilfong
The Lynchburg College athletic department each week showcases a question and answer feature with our Hornet of the Week. The thirty-first student-athlete in this series is men's lacrosse senior midfielder Andrew Wilfong.
Wilfong scored two goals and assisted on two more scores in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Championship game. He added four groundballs in the Hornets victory over Washington and Lee University. The win gave LC its first ODAC title and NCAA tournament birth since 2008.
Why did you choose Lynchburg College?
Before I looked at Lynchburg College I knew I wanted to play college lacrosse and major in a business related field. Lynchburg was a perfect fit from what I had seen and heard on my three visits. The most attractive parts about the lacrosse team were the team had a traditionally blue-collar work ethic mentality along with a strong sense of family connected through the group. On my recruiting visit I had an awesome opportunity that my host took me to talk with some of the 2008 seniors. After talking with some of the seniors about the lacrosse team and the business school, I was overwhelmed with a sense of Lynchburg College was the right place for me.
What was it like to win the ODAC Tournament?
Winning the ODAC Tournament was one of the best feelings of achievement I have experienced over the course of my four years attending LC. Knowing that all the work the team had put in since we lost last year's ODAC Championship had finally paid off was an overwhelming feeling of success. Getting a chance to ring the victory bell right after the award ceremony to top it all off was another amazing feeling. Coach and the seniors had talked about ringing that bell for a long time, but finally ringing the bell was a great feeling of accomplishment.
What do you like most about LC men's lacrosse?
The whole pre-game atmosphere is by far my favorite aspect of LC men's lacrosse. After watching film and getting a good meal, we head back to the locker room. That first time you unlock the locker room door and walk in to the locker room is one of the coolest feelings. The coaches do a great job of hanging up all our jerseys in each player's locker, neatly placing our shooting shirts on our bench and putting our game shorts on our stools. Especially before we went to play Salisbury this year the coaching staff surprised us with new, all black under armour uniforms. Another great pre-game aspect is the shoot around and warm-up before the game. I love this time because I get to just simply focus on the task at hand and listen to the great music playing.
What is your favorite class or teacher?
My favorite and most helpful teacher at LC is definitely Professor Nancy Schneider. She really helped me with my accounting studies, class scheduling, finding an internship, and developing some good study habits that would help in all my other areas of study outside of accounting. She really took the time to make sure all of her advisees were accounted for and were on the right track to graduation.
