Wims, Defense Pace Hornets to 69-54 Win in New York
PURCHASE, NY – Michael Wims scored 22 points and the defense forced 26 turnovers to help the Lynchburg College men's basketball team defeat Gordon College on Friday Night. The win at Manhattanville College puts the Hornets in the championship game of the 1st Annual AJ Buchanan Classic.
GC scored the first basket of the game off of a jumper by Taylor Bajema, but it would prove to be the last lead of the game for the Fightin Scots. LC would open up a 10-point lead five minutes into the game after Mike Glover finished a lay-up off a nice pass from Andrew Simmons. Gordon would cut the lead to four after a timeout, but Lynchburg pushed the advantage to as much as 17 in the first half with 6:34 remaining. The Scots would cut the deficit to nine before the half.
After two free throws by Brandan Connor had the Hornets up by 11, Gordon responded to cut the lead to as little as three points with 14:38 remaining. LC took a timeout to stop the run and Wims responded in the ensuing possession, hitting his shot from behind the arc off a pass from Alex Graves.
The game remained close with Lynchburg only having a one-point lead at the 9:50 mark. Austen Arnold and Xavier Parham both hit a pair of free throws, which was answered by only one Gordon free throw. The Hornets would then go on their run to seal the game.
With just over seven minutes left, Graves caught the ball off the left block, ripped by the Scots Hans Miersma, and finished with a difficult lay-up. The Lynchburg coaches called a timeout to set up the press, which worked to perfection. Connor registered one of his six steals and LC forced another turnover and converted both opportunities. With the advantage stretched to 10 in such a short period of time, the Hornets would not look back and finish with a 69-54 victory.
David Dempsey had 13 points and seven rebounds for the Scots (2-4 overall, 0-2 CCC). LC not only had fewer turnovers in the game, but had twice as many assists as the Gordon in the game.
Wims added four rebounds in the win. Connor had a solid all-around day, scoring 10 points and grabbing six caroms to go along with his defense.
Lynchburg (6-2, 0-2 ODAC) will play the winner of Manhattanville College and Berkeley (NY) College in the championship game on Saturday. The game will begin at 4 p.m.
