Hornet Five Game Winning Streak Snapped 90-87 at Randolph-Macon
ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College men's basketball team survived a late Lynchburg College comeback to earn a 90-87 victory in a battle of top Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) squads.
The Hornets scored the first nine points of the game, the first seven from senior forward Nate Campbell before Randolph-Macon got on the scoreboard. LC still held a 30-29 lead before a Yellow Jacket 11-2 run closed out the first half with a 40-32 advantage.
R-MC opened the second half with another big run, a 12-3 spurt over the first two minutes to assume a 52-35 edge. The Yellow Jackets led by 15 (83-68) with just over six minutes left but the Hornets didn't give up. A furious late comeback by Lynchburg cut the advantage to 87-85 after a 17-4 run with just one minute on the game clock. Andre Simon scored for R-MC with 22 seconds left to extend the lead to four and each team missed key late free throws to produce the final result.
Junior center Austin Chillemi finished with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, hitting 7-of-11 shots and blocking two shots. Sophomore Xavier Parham led LC with 16 points and added six assists, five steals and three boards. Campbell finished with 12 points and Manny Hernandez posted 11 points, two rebounds and two steals. Brandan Connor, Tucker Lucas and Harry West, Jr. all had seven points and Michael Wims had six points and eight caroms.
Adam Desgain netted a game-high 24 points for Randolph-Macon (6-2/2-1 ODAC) and Simon tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The Hornets (7-2/2-1) travel to Division I Elon University Sunday for a contest slated to start at 2 p.m.
