Hornets Fly to 100-81 Win over Goucher
Xavier Parham Sets LC Single-Game Assist Record, Ties Steal Mark
LYNCHBURG, VA – Sophomore Xavier Parham broke one school record and tied another Saturday afternoon to lead the Lynchburg College men's basketball team to a 100-81 victory over Goucher College in non-conference play.
Parham broke the school's single-season assist record, distributing 15, to break the old mark of 13 from the 1978-79 season. He also tied the record for most steals in a game with nine, a total also tied by teammate Brandan Conner Tuesday night at Marymount University. Parham also added 10 points and five rebounds, ending just one steal shy of a triple double.
The contest was tied at 25-all with 11 minutes left in the first half. The Hornets hit three-straight three pointers, two from senior Tucker Lucas, and a pair of free throws to cap an 11-0 run and take a 36-25 lead. The Hornets extended the advantage to 56-41 by intermission.
LC went cold to start the second half, as the Gophers crept back into the game. Goucher allowed just five points over the first five minutes to go on a 17-5 run and pull back within three. The Gophers trailed by just seven (80-73) with 7:36 on the game clock, but the Hornets pulled away for good.
Sophomore Manny Hernandez scored 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting, and added three steals. Lucas netted 15 points behind four three-point baskets, and Michael Glover was solid with 13 points, hitting 5-of-7 from the field. Austin Chillemi had nine points and Robby Kaiser scored eight.
Alex Noble scored a game-high 28 points for Goucher (0-4), hitting all 12 of his free throws to go with six boards. Marcus Cotton tallied 19 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and three steals and Shane Yambor added 11 points and seven caroms.
The LC defense forced 24 turnovers and the Hornets shot 47 percent (9-19) from behind the three-point arc.
The Hornets (4-1) return to action this Monday evening in Turner Gymnasium, hosting non-conference foe Averett University at 7 p.m.
