LYNCHBURG, VA –
The Christopher Newport University field hockey team scored a second-half goal to defeat Lynchburg College 1-0 Friday evening in a battle between two teams ranked in the top 20.

The 13th-ranked Hornets fought off two early attempts by the Captains. #9 Christopher Newport's Jordan Snider had a shot on goal, but Melanie Tenney moved in front to collect her first defensive save of the season. Snider followed up with another strike that was turned away by Lynchburg goalie Jordan Seeley. The first half ended scoreless.

Each team was awarded a penalty stroke in the second half, but neither could capitalize on the opportunity. CNU got on the scoreboard at 48:38 with a tally by Lauren Cheatham on an assist by Marlene Lichty.

The Hornets out-shot the visitors 17-13 with each goalie making five saves – Seeley for LC and Bailey Lein for CNU (3-0). LC was awarded six penalty corners to the Captains' four. Tenney had two defensive saves and Chelsea Hines had one for CNU.

Lynchburg (1-2) travels to the University of Mary Washington on Sunday for a neutral site matchup with Rhodes College (0-2).
