Milks Grabs Two Honors; Seven Hornets Honored Overall
FOREST, VA— The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) released the post-season awards for field hockey on Thursday, and for the third straight-year Hornet Shelly Milks took home the highest honor. Six of her teammates from the ODAC title-winning team were also named to the one of the three All-ODAC teams.
Milks has continued her great career this year for Lynchburg, earning her third first-team All-ODAC honor. She has scored 10 goals and assisted on 10 more to tally 30 points on the year, good for fifth in the ODAC. However, her biggest impact may come on the defensive end of the field. Milks is a major contributor to a defense that has allowed only 19 goals on the year. She was also named the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar Athlete of the Year this season. It is the second-straight year she has won the award. Milks is an exercise physiology major and Spanish minor who carries an impressive 3.97 cumulative grade point average.
Joining Milks on the first-team for the second-consecutive year is Lindsay Leonard. Just as in 2011, the senior forward led the league in points (48) and goals (21) in 2012. She is currently sixth on the all-time list at LC in goals and fifth in points. Leonard biggest goal of the season came Wednesday night, the overtime-winner over Catholic University in the first-round of the NCAA tournament.
The last Hornet on the first-team was defender Nicole Marburger. The junior earned her first conference honor while being a stalwart on the backline for LC. In addition to the impact she has made defensively, Marburger has scored four goals and tallied five assists.
Landing on the second-team for the second year in a row is defender Melanie Tenney. Tenney, a junior defender, contributed to one of the best defenses in the nation. She also tallied one goal on the year.
Three Hornets earned spots on the third-team: Courtney Gillete, Katie Kline, and Kelli Williams. Gillete, a freshman defender, started every game for Lynchburg this year. Along with contributing to the backline, Gillete played an important on penalty corners, ending the season with two assists. Kline, the reigning ODAC Rookie of the Year, scored eight goals and had one helper in her sophomore season. Williams, a junior attack, garnered her first ODAC honor this season. She tallied four goals and three assists, while starting every game.
After defeating the Cardinals, LC will move on to play Messiah College. The second-round NCAA tournament match-up will be held at the University of Mary Washington on Saturday. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
