Nelson the Overtime Hero for the Hornets
LYNCHBURG, VA – With less than five minutes remaining in the first overtime period, Ashley Nelson put a shot in the back of the cage to give the #17 Lynchburg College field hockey team a 2-1 victory over Lebanon Valley College on Saturday.
For the first 30 minutes of the game, both teams went back and forth with the Hornets getting most of the chances. At 32:43, Nicole Marburger took hold of a loose ball in front of the cage and made a quick pass to Kelsey Link. Link sent her shot to the left of LVC goalie Chloe Baro and into the back of the goal to give LC the lead going into the intermission.
The beginning second half went the same way as the first half, with each team getting a few scoring opportunities. After a Lynchburg green card, and ensuing two-minute penalty, the Dutchmen evened the score with a tally from Megan Harris at 61:47. LC then scored what seemed to be the game-winner with less than five minutes in the game, but the referees waved it off, as the game was destined for extra time.
In the first session of seven on seven action, the Hornets pressured Lebanon Valley, outshooting them 6-2 and earning two penalty corners to zero for the Dutchmen. With five minutes left Nelson, made her first run at Baro, and Baro made the stop. Lindsay Leonard scooped up the rebound, but Baro once again saved the day. However, the third time was the charm for LC as Nelson ended the game with her swing at 75:15.
Baro led LVC (9-7 overall) with seven saves in the game. LC outshot the Dutchmen 17-7 for the game and earned seven more penalty corners as well.
Lynchburg (13-3) returns to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play this Tuesday. The Hornets will head to the National Training Center in Virginia Beach to take on Virginia Wesleyan at 6:30 p.m.
