#14 Captains Defeat LC Field Hockey 1-0
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Lindsay Hendricks put home the only goal of the game, to give #14 Christopher Newport University the victory over the #19 Lynchburg College field hockey team on Sunday.
The first half had a flurry of action, as both teams registered shots on goal throughout. LC goalie Hannah Myers and her CNU counterpart Jamie Dowling proved to be ready for the task, stopping four and six shots respectively. They were helped by their teammates as Johanna Agustin registered a defensive save for Lynchburg, and Chelsea Hines did the same for the Captains. The score would remain tied at 0 at the intermission.
After a scoreless initial five minutes of the second stanza, Hendricks sent her shot in the back of the cage, with Belle Tunstall assisting on the winner. Both teams would get a few more chances, with Melanie Tenney making a defensive save later on in the half to preserve the one-goal deficit. The Hornets would continue to push, outshooting the Captains 6-3 in the half and earning more penalty corners (4-2) as well. CNU would not let down, and earn the victory.
Dowling led Christopher Newport (8-1) with eight saves on the day. LC outshot the Captains 15-7 over the entire game.
Lynchburg (8-3) will host Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) foe Washington and Lee University on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Play 4 the Cure Game will have t-shirts on sale and other fundraisers available.
