#13 Hornet Field Hockey Breezes to an 8-2 Win Over Depauw

LYNCHBURG, VA – The 13th-ranked Lynchburg College field hockey team picked up its' first win of the season Friday night 8-2 over visiting DePauw University (IN).

The Hornets opened the scoring early with a Deanna Smith tally from Lindsay Leonard just 1:36 into the game. The Tigers' Margaret Ellis scored on a penalty stroke at 5:26 and the game remained tied at one all for the next 14 minutes. Kelli Williams gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead from Shelly Milks 20 minutes into the first half and Leonard followed with an unassisted goal. Katie Kline found the back of the cage on a Leonard feed and LC took the 4-1 lead in intermission.

Halftime was longer than expected as a 30-minute lightning delay was tacked onto the normal 10-minute intermission. 

Smith and Williams scored unassisted goals early in the second half while Heather Dodge and Leonard added late tallies. Ellis scored for DePauw in the closing minutes, assisted by Caroline Torie.

Leonard finished with two goals and two assists while Williams and Smith each scored twice. Kline posted a goal and an assist.

Lynchburg outshot its' guests 23-10 and DePauw held an 8-7 edge in penalty corners. Tiffany Frye made two saves in almost 42 minutes of action to pick up the victory, while Maggie Steele made eight stops in the Tiger net.

The Hornet field hockey team (1-1) will host Washington College Sunday at 4 p.m. in more non-conference action.
