LC Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Guilford
GREENSBORO, NC – The Lynchburg College baseball team split its doubleheader on Sunday with Guilford College, falling 3-2 in the first game and winning 4-2 in the second in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
In the first game against Guilford, Lynchburg fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning after John Macon Smith homered scoring two. LC got on the board in the top of the third inning off a single from junior Michael Del Buono, scoring fellow junior Michael Kenah.
Down 2-1 in the top of the eighth inning, Del Buono homered, tying up the game. Both teams remained knotted up a two until Guilford's Kent Peterson singled in a run in the bottom of the twelfth frame to give the Quakers the 3-2 victory.
Senior Robert Garrett pitched seven innings, giving up six hits and striking out four. Fellow senior Jared Millner pitched four and one-thirds innings, relinquishing two hits. Ryan Lindsay earned the win for the Quakers.
During the second game, Guilford jumped out to another 2-0 lead in the first inning off two back-to-back RBI singles from Zack Montalbano and Justin Pittman. Lynchburg scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the second off an RBI-single from freshman JP Nicholas Jr.
Freshman Charlie Thieringer got the start on the hill for the Hornets. Freshman Brandon Miller came on in relief for four innings before giving way to sophomores James Womack and Michael Mansfield.
Nicholas singled in two runs in the bottom of the sixth plating juniors Dan Savage and Brock Shiflett, giving LC a 3-2 advantage. Del Buono homered in the bottom of the eighth, setting up Womack for the save in the final inning, helping lead to a 4-2 win for Lynchburg.
Borja Jones-Berasaluce pitched six innings for the Quakers (8-4/1-1 ODAC) taking his first loss on the season.
Lynchburg (6-3/1-1 ODAC) hosts Southern Virginia University on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m.
