Hornets Defeat Nationally Ranked Birmingham Southern 7-4

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Lynchburg College baseball team defeated Birmingham Southern College Friday afternoon 7-4 in the first game of the weekend at the Methodist University Diamond Baseball Tournament.

The Hornets took advantage of a Panther error to plate two runs in the second frame, but Birmingham Southern answered with two runs in the third inning to tie the game. Sophomore catcher Zach Fitzpatrick ripped a two-run single in the top of the fourth inning and stopped a BSC rally in the bottom of the sixth by throwing out a runner stealing third after one run had already scored. Junior Brock Shiflett doubled to score another run in the seventh to make it 5-3, but the Panthers scored again in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to one.

Junior Ashton Paige hit a double in the eighth to score two insurance runs and make the score 7-4. Sophomore Michael Mansfield worked two perfect innings for the save and to make a winner out of senior starter Robert Garrett. Garrett worked six innings for his second victory of the season, allowing six hits, one walks and three earned runs with five strikeouts.

Fitzpatrick was 2-3 with three RBI, while Shiflett also had two hits. Stephen Denton was 2-5 with an RBI for Birmingham Southern (0-3).

The Hornets (3-1) are scheduled to face Frostburg State (11 a.m.) and Methodist (5 p.m.) Saturday in Fayetteville.
