FAYETTEVILLE, NC – Tripp Lancaster and Shawn Lovette combined for seven hits Saturday afternoon as the Methodist University baseball team defeated visiting Lynchburg College 5-4 in non-conference play.
The Hornets got on the board first in the top of the third inning on a two-out, two-run single by sophomore Brock Shifflett (Henrico, VA/Steward School). The Monarchs answered with three in the bottom of the frame with four infield hits and aided by two LC errors. LC tied the game in the fifth as Mike Walters (Manassas, VA/Osbourn) doubled and scored on an RBI single from Jordan Watkins (Freeland, MD/Hereford). Methodist scored a single run in the sixth and LC again tied the score with a sacrifice fly from Shifflett. MU scored the winning run in the seventh on a groundout. Lynchburg had a potential ninth-inning rally killed when a runner was picked off base.
Walters had three basehits for LC while Michael Kenah (Clifton, VA/Robinson) had two hits. Brian Breedlove (Clifton, VA/Robinson) got the start for LC on the hill, working six innings and allowing three earned runs with four strikeouts while scattering 11 hits.
Lancaster had four hits and Lovette added three for MU (3-1). Lynchburg (2-2) hosts Stevenson Tuesday at 2 p.m.
