Hornet Squads Move Up in Rankings

LYNCHBURG, VA - The men's and women's cross country and the men's and women's soccer  teams each moved up in the rankings this week after opening up the season strong.

The men's cross country team, coming off a third place finish at the Virginia Wesleyan College Invitational, moved up to third in the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South/Southeast Region Poll. Additionally, the women also moved up a spot to fourth in the region after breezing to a first place finish at the VWC Invitational. The cross country teams return to the course this Saturday morning at Elon University.

Men's soccer began receiving votes this week in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The Hornets are one of four teams receiving votes in the first poll of the regular season that was filled with changes as ten new teams joined the rankings and all but four teams changed positions in the poll. Lynchburg also ranks fourth in the South Atlantic Region, three spots ahead of ODAC rival Roanoke College. LC hosts the annual Shellenberger Memorial Tournament this Saturday and Sunday.

Women's soccer moved up three places from tenth to seventh in the latest NSCAA rankings while also maintaining their ranking as the top team in the South Atlantic Region. The Hornets dispatched of perennial Top-25 squads Christopher Newport and then-fourth ranked William Smith by a combined score of 2-1 and were on the losing end of a 1-0 decision against then-sixth ranked Johns Hopkins University. The women return to the pitch on Sunday at noon at Salisbury University, who is ranked sixth in the South Atlantic Region.

The field hockey team is ranked 16th in the preseason poll and sporting a 3-0 with the first regular season poll slated to come out next week. Additionally, the volleyball team is off to a hot start with a 4-0 record.
